Composer's Note:
“By Any Other Name” is a slower piece where the tempo indication says “Freely”. The conductor is encouraged to use some “give and take” with the tempos within the phrases (Rubato). Where I felt it most important I actually wrote it into the score. A great selection to get the ensemble to watch the conductor.
The title is part of a longer quote from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet”.
This is an excellent piece for groups that enjoy playing music between grade 1.5-2. Great for phrasing and group balance. A wonderful addition to any concert.
