Obertura is Spanish for “Overture”. This piece is a great opener with a certainly Spanish flavor.
It begins with the upper woodwinds moving rapidly, with the snare drum helping to drive the melody. The rest of the ensemble provides block chord impact points to provide additional excitement and energy. Soon the composition moves into a carnival like theme with the added tambourine and claves to reinforce the Spanish flavor. Then back to the block chord impact points without the melody, creating a sense of urgency before the upper woodwinds join in.
The song then transitions into the slow section. Just a few instruments first with a beautiful melody and many moving parts behind it. Instruments are slowly added until the entire ensemble is playing.
Speeding up back to the original tempo with a quick recap of the upper woodwind melody with block chords and the carnival theme takes you to the end. Your students and audience alike will love this piece.
