Composer's Note:
“ Along the pattern as “Con Brio”, “Opus 1” is full of energy and excitement. The woodwinds get a good workout as do the mallet players and the snare drum player.
I believe this is my 1st piece in cut time. Also, for the first time in years I am using 4 horns.
The indication for only 1 clarinet and 1 flute player at the start of the slow section should be taken to heart. I wrote it that way on purpose to give the other players an chance to rest. Once the remaining flute and clarinets enter at the “tutti” the soloists can take a short break. The slow part is very fluid. All the parts are moving parts as I gradually add instruments until the full band is again playing for the recap of the cut time."
Advanced bands can really ignite some musical fireworks by opening their concert with this invigorating piece by Thomas Juzwiak. Fully utilizing the capabilities of each section, this piece demonstrates the intensity you would expect from a work at this level.
