Composer's note: “Ten Years” is a Euphonium and Trumpet duet accompanied by a full concert band. The two duet instruments are separate from the established Concert Band instrumentation. They are not “taken” from the already existing parts.
The title is derived from the relationship between my cousin Joe and myself. He was born ten years, to the day, before me. He was born on September 13, 1953 and I on September 13, 1963.
He, Joseph Thomas can be heard through the voice of the euphonium and me, Thomas Joseph can be heard through the trumpet.
Most of the time we play separately, letting “Joe” have the first word. Sometimes we play in unison and sometimes we play different themes at the same time. The Concert Band also get’s its opportunity to play on their own.
Embark on a poignant musical journey with 'Ten Years,' a stirring Euphonium and Trumpet duet composed by Thomas Juzwiak, accompanied by a full concert band. This composition unfolds a unique dialogue between the two instruments, symbolizing the relationship between the composer, and his cousin, born exactly ten years apart on September 13. Through a dynamic interplay of separate and unified voices, the euphonium and trumpet bring to life the shared musical narrative of two kindred spirits, occasionally joined by the full concert band, each element weaving its own emotional tapestry in this evocative piece.
